Brian Harper is an Assistant Professor of Fine Art, teaching all levels of ceramics and the Head of the Ceramics Program at Indiana University Southeast. He is responsible for the management of the ceramics program, the ceramics program budget, student advising, and he is the faculty advisor for the IUS clay club, which he and the students founded in the Fall ‘O8 semester. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he is a practicing artist and has exhibited his work in over 50 exhibitions, including 8 solo exhibitions.
Before coming to IU Southeast, Brian taught ceramics at Baylor University in Waco, Texas for two years. While there, he worked with Paul McCoy and they were able to offer many types of firing including wood, salt, raku, pit, electric, low fire fuming, using three gas kilns and a 40 cu ft. Bailey car kiln.
He began his schooling at the Art Institute of Boston in photography. It was at the Art Institute that Brian became more focused on ceramics and he eventually relocated to Flagstaff, Arizona to finish his undergraduate education at Northern Arizona University. For a year in between his undergraduate and graduate schooling, Brian was the assistant to Don Reitz. During his apprenticeship with Reitz, Brian lived and worked alongside him at his studio and residence in Clarkdale, Arizona. Brian finished his schooling at the University of Iowa, earning his M.A. and M.F.A there.
